As of Saturday, 4,114 people were hospitalized for COVID-19, far more than the springtime’s prior peak.

The Pennsylvania health department is reporting thousands of new cases daily, but Saturday’s update — 8,053 new cases — was just the second time the state surpassed 8,000 in a single day. The first was two days earlier on Thanksgiving, when the state set a daily record of 8,425 newly reported cases.
